Chapter 2 - Session 3: Sometimes it's Better to be Lucky

Session date: October 11th, 2017

On Two Fronts

At the end of the last session, the characters were in a bit of a pickle. Kalain was in the eastern tower of the main gate with three hobgoblins headed towards him; while Shudo,”Z” and Pork were on the second floor of a house and had three hobgoblins following them. There were also several goblins, from various areas of the town, moving towards the front gate to investigate the reason for the alarm horn.

Two of the hobgoblins headed into the eastern tower to engage the elf Paladin Kalain, while the third, an apparent leader of some sort, moved into the western tower and out on the wall to examine the fire area and assess the situation. Kalain was in for the fight of his life, his foes were more challenging than his previous adversaries. He took a couple of blows from their glaive’s that made him consider flight. Instead he call upon the healing powers of his deity Sehanine Moonbow and was partially healed. His resolved strengthened, he took to the offensive, striking blows with his magical longsword. It wasn’t going to be enough though without some help.

The three adventurers, hearing the hobgoblins move into the house below them, took up a defensive position with Shudo at the top of the stairs, Pork to the side where he could assist, and “Z” near a window where he could watch outside and provide missile fire on enemies that engaged Shudo. With the width of the staircase, the hobgoblins had no choice but to proceed one at a time. This played into the parties strategy, as they were able to minimize their foes offensive capabilities. Pork Chop called upon Kelemvor to bless his group with divine power, providing a boost to their skills. The group took a few good shots from the hobgoblins, but were able to efficiently wipe them out because of their strategy and divine blessing.

The dwarven warlock Fosgrim, seeing that things weren’t going well, moved into the town across the breach in the wall. Luckily for Kalainm Fosgrim spotted him in the tower, surrounded by hobgoblins and took up a advantageous position and began sniping the hobgoblins with arcane bolts of energy. The unexpected help provided a big morale boost to Kalain as he struck down one of his foes with a mighty swing of his sword. There were still two more hobgoblins and the original goblin guard to deal with, but with the skillful sniper Fosgrim helping, they were able to kill the goblin and the hobgoblin guard. The hobgoblin leader decided to make a run for it, seeing his dire straits, but he was quickly taken down with a deadly bow shot.

Having eliminated the immediate threat, the party reunited in the common grounds and began searching for other goblinoids. A couple of sneaky goblins with bows came in from the east and fired some deadly shots at Kalain, causing him to fall. The rest of the party quickly recovered, returning fire on the goblins and were able to defeat them. Pork once again called on Kelemvor’s powers to heal Kalain, allowing him to continue. The party resumed their search, performing a building by building exploration.

Searching the Town

During their exploration, the party found most of the buildings vacant and rifled through. The goblins had a few weeks to search through the town; take any valuables; and enslave any survivors. One of the eventful searches was in the temple of Chaunteau. Here they found the temple priests bodies still remained in the church, but as they started to look around the bodies arrose with moans and assaulted the party. One thing the group is certainly built for is destroying undead, with a Paladin devoted to hunting them and a priest of Kelemvor, so these zombies barely had a chance to move before they were sent to their eternal rest.

While finishing the search of the lower town, they found a few more things of interest. First, there was a long chain stretched across the river, attached to gear mechanisms on both sides. There was a barrel like attachment to the chain, that could be used to send people and supplies across the river in either direction. As they careful looked out across the river, at the other side, they saw that there was a small fortified area and it looked like there were a couple goblin guards manning that post. When they searched the old mill, they found signs that the hobgoblins must have taken residence there and were able to recover some valuables left behind when they answered the alarm call.

In their search of the remaining guard towers, they did not find any remaining guards, they must have all engaged the party or fled. Having searched the entire lower town, they moved to the bridge that connected the two sections of town, by traversing the moats. In the middle of this bridge was a wall with a single locked door. Now to get through that door and continue their search for raiders and surviving townsfolk.
