Chapter 2 - Session 2: Infiltrating Julkoun

Session date: October 4th, 2017

Luring the Goblins

The party decided to spend the night in the farmhouse they moved up to in the previous session, with the hope of luring small groups of goblins out to them, where they could reduce their numbers before heading into the town. The two elves, needing less sleep than the others, decided to take the watches with Kalain taking the first watch and Shudo the second. Kalain climbed onto the roof of the farmhouse and took up a position near the chimney, to provide some cover and a good vantage point.

A couple of hours into his watch, Kalain spotted a small group of goblins riding wolves moving through the area in the direction of the fires the party had built to draw them in. It appeared that the goblins were unaware of Kalain, so he decided to take advantage of the situation and fired his longbow at one of the wolves. It was a deadly shot, killing the wolf and dropping the goblin to the ground. Kalain stomped his foot hard on the roof, hoping to wake his companions, while continuing to fire at the remaining foes.

Slowly, the other party members made their way out of the farmhouse to confront the goblins. The goblins were out manned and were quickly dispatched. The characters searched the bodies and watched for a follow up patrol, which didn't materialize, so they returned to their beds. The rest of the night was uneventful.

Scouting the Situation

In the morning they decided to burn another fire, including the dead goblins at the demand of Kalain, in the hope of luring more goblins out. They waited all day and were unable to lure additional patrols. A new plan was in order, so they decided that they would move in closer to town and scout the situation. They found a thicket of trees that provided a good hiding place and Kalain moved in closer to see what he could discover. Kalain was chosen over the rogue 'Z' because of his ability to see in the dark.

While canvasing the outer walls, Kalain discovered guard posts with goblins in them spaced around the outer walls to provide good coverage of the areas beyond the walls. He also found that the goblins had fortified the areas in front of the gates, with spikes and barricades to make it it a difficult task to get through them. Luckily, he spotted a place in the wall where the goblins had apparently gained access to the inner town, a section that had been taken down and the hastily rebuilt, seemingly after the goblins secured the town. He decided to climb over that section of wall to see what else he could discover from inside the town walls. While climbing the rough wall, it collapsed, sending him tumbling backwards, with a crash of timbers. He found a nearby hiding spot to take refuge and see if any of the goblins came to check the disturbance. Sure enough, a lone goblin came to investigate. Kalain decided to take a chance and quietly drew back his bow string, arrow nocked, and let it fly at the single guard. His aim was true as the arrow sped to it's target and through his neck, sending him face down on the walkway.

After the encounter at the wall, Kalain decided to examine the collection of buildings outside the town walls to the west. There he found most of them burned to the ground, but there were a couple structures that were mostly intact. All of the buildings were empty, with anything of value already taken by the marauding goblins. A plan was forming in his mind, it was time to head back to the group and discuss their options.

Out of the Trees and Into the Pickle Jar

With the information presented to them about the wall breach, guard situation and the structures to the west, the party decided to follow Kalain's recommendation. His idea was to start a fire in the mostly intact building to the west of town, distracting the goblins, and then use the breach in the wall to get the entire party inside the town walls. Kalain headed back to the building he selected and using his wilderness skills, built a fire he was confident would spread and engulf the building. One that task was done he quickly made his way back to his comrades.

The party waited for the fire to build, while watching the remaining guard they could see from their vantage point. The goblin began to stir and move to the west to examine the fire. The group took advantage of the distraction to cautiously make their way to the breach, with Fosgrim taking up the rear guard. Kalain decided he was going to climb up the palisade, to the inner walkway and take out the guard they had been watching. As 'Z' traversed the breach, the silence of the night was broken by the sound of three short bursts from a horn in the area of the main gate. Kalain continued his stealthy advance, while the rest of the party made haste to enter the town, taking refuge behind a large home near the wall.

As Kalain was nearing the guard tower, he noticed movement in the common area to the south. He saw several armor clad hobgoblins headed in his direction, which may have been a coincidence since he was close to the main gate. He decided to proceed with his plan to pursue the goblin as the hobgoblins closed in, while the rest of the party continued scaling the breach. As the hobgoblins approached the main gate, they noticed the other party members to the east and three of them split off to pursue them on the command of the leader. The leader went out on the wall to assess the threat of the fire after sending the other two hobgoblins with him to kill the elf (Kalain).

Meanwhile, the rest of the party had decided to move into the nearby house and up to the second floor to give them a better view of the situation. The three hobgoblins pursued them, entering the home just behind them. Things weren't looking great for the young adventurers.
