Chapter 3 - Session 3: Ascending Firefinger

Session date: January 10, 2018

Day 10 - Firefinger

The party members hide near the edge of the jungle, watching the rocky pinnacle called Firefinger, home of a flock of pterafolk. They decided to wait for the cover of night or a heavy rain storm to mask their approach from the flying sentinels. An opportunity arose when a heavy storm started pelting the area with heavy rain, creating obscured visibility in the area. They quickly make their way to the base of the towers, while being alert to anything out of the ordinary. Near the base of the spire, the characters find the body of an elf lying in the mud. Most of his limbs are broken, the ribcage crushed, and broken twigs and torn leaves are stuck in it what’s left of his clothes. The body looked as if it had fallen a great distance to his death. Not far away they find a second, then a third and many other bodies in similar condition.

They reach the base of the tower and find the rope-and-wood ladders in rough condition, they are ancient and crumbling and don't give the characters a lot of confidence in their ability to support them. They decided to tie a couple ropes together to use in assisting climbers, to make sure they don't fall. Shudo took the lead, heading up the first ladder with the rope in tow and made the climb with grace. The rest of the party followed, tying the rope around them to ensure that if they slipped, they wouldn't go splat on the ground. Their faithful guide Azaka took up the rear and had the only mishap, when she was pulling on a wrung and it broke. But all was well as she caught herself before falling.

*** In the interest of getting caught up, I am going to put less details into the blog and will just concentrate on the highlights ***

The party ascends Firefinger, finding a small flock of stirges on the second level. The third level has a large nest with several elderly pterafolk and a aarakocra being held prisoner. They are unable to communicate with the bird-man, so they just set him free. The only access to the top of the tower is a long narrow chimney. The party gets split up here, as some members climb the chimney, while others stay on the level and start fighting with some pterafolk that spotted them. On the pinnacle is a structure and many adult pteraafolk, including their leader. After a challenging fight, the party emerges victorious and are able to recover the mask for Azaka, that is a family heirloom, as well as some other valuables. From the top of Firefinger, the party can see a good ways in all directions, making note of interesting landmarks on their map. They are able to spot the river Olung to the east, a good guide that will take them to Nangalore, accordng to their guide.

To the southwest, the party can see a vast basin with a large river that flows through it. This is remarkable, in that in every other direction all they can see is jungle spreading to the coastlines in the east and mountain ranges everywhere else. Some prominent volcanoes to the far south stop the spread of the jungle.

Another feature that catches their attention is a massive chunk of earth that appears to be floating above the vast basin on it's eastern side.
